1. What are tungsten carbide rolls?

Tungsten carbide rolls are high-performance rolling tools made from tungsten carbide (WC) bonded with cobalt through a powder-metallurgy process.

They offer extremely high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and outstanding impact strength.

Widely used in high-speed wire rod mills, bar mills, and rebar rolling lines.

2. What are the main advantages of tungsten carbide rolls?

3. What does 70%, 75%, 80% WC mean? How is the grade selected?

WC percentage determines the balance between hardness and toughness:

• 70–75% WC (high cobalt) → Higher toughness, suitable for roughing stands

• 75–80% WC (medium cobalt) → Balanced hardness & toughness, suitable for intermediate stands

• 85–90% WC (low cobalt) → High hardness and wear resistance, ideal for finishing stands

We select WC/Co ratio based on each stand and the mill’s operating conditions.

4. What causes carbide rolls to chip or break?

Common reasons include:

• Excessive impact load (wrong grade for the stand)

• WC content too high → toughness too low

• Improper grain size or micro-structure

• Steel containing sand, scale, or inclusions

• Rolling temperature too low

• Poor assembly, misalignment, or unstable tension

We can adjust grade and micro-structure to eliminate these failures.

5. What are the common material grades?

Standard grades:

• YG6 / YG6X

• YG8

• YG10 / YG10X

• YG15

For rolling mills, customized WC contents such as 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% are widely used depending on the stand.

6. What is the typical service life?

Service life depends on steel grade, rolling speed, temperature, cooling, stand position, and chosen material.

In general, tungsten carbide rolls last:

• 5–20 times longer than cast iron

• 2–5 times longer than HSS rolls

7. Can you recommend grades for each stand?

Yes. We already provided recommendations according to the stand numbers (K7–K13, etc.).

General rule:

• Roughing → 70–75% WC

• Intermediate → 75–80% WC

• Finishing → 85–90% WC

8. Can tungsten carbide rolls be reground?

Yes. Rolls can be reground using diamond wheels on professional grinding machines.

Typical grinding allowance: 1–3 mm, depending on cracks and remaining margin.

9. Can you produce cooling holes, keyways, or sleeves?
